Ride of the week – Portugal; horse riding holiday in Portugal

21st August 2020
This week’s featured horse riding holiday is on the beautiful Alentejo Coast in south west Portugal. Possible year round (except August when beaches are usually too busy), it is a super option for early spring and late autumn because of the area’s mild climate. Even in November days can be warm enough to picnic outside.

On the 6 night Atlantic Trail, the ride follows a figure of 8 route, with the horses spending some nights away from the main stables and riders driven a short way back to the base each night. This means you get to ride further afield but its relaxing without the rushed packing and unpacking of bags
every day.

The route heads along the coast and inland on sandy tracks through olive groves, cork oak and pine forest. There’s plenty of good going for fun canters. In summer (between 1st June and 30th  September) horses head through the dunes and on cliff paths, not across the beach, but in late autumn and early spring, beach riding and a chance to paddle in the waves is part of the whole experience.

Low key and relaxed, with great horses and a family atmosphere
